ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND

President Bush invited the Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen to Camp David on Friday, June 9, 2006. This was 6th meeting between the President and the Prime Minister in 5 years. On the eve of the visit, the Danish Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Friis Arne Petersen, states: “The Camp David meeting offers an opportunity for the two leaders to continue their discussion on a range of bilateral and strategic issues. Denmark and the United States are close allies in the fight against terror. Like the United States, Denmark is committed to supporting the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, promoting reform and democracy in the broader Middle East, and strengthening the transatlantic partnership.”

The meeting between Prime Minister Rasmussen and President Bush takes place at a point in time when the economic relationship between Denmark and the United States has never been better - a fact that is also expected to be part of the discussions between the Prime Minister and the President.

After meeting the President at Camp David, the Prime Minister will go to the West Coast June 12 - 13. On the West Coast the Prime Minister will visit Danish companies and participate in the opening of Vestas windmills at Montezuma Hills, CA. On Monday 12 June, the Prime Minister will give a lecture at the University of California, Berkeley. In Seattle on June 13, the Prime Minister will meet the chairman of the board of Microsoft, Bill Gates and speak at a lunch hosted by the Northwest Danish Foundation.

This will be the 3rd head of state visit in the last few months with both the President of China and Mexico visiting the Puget Sound region.  In the last year, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, President of Ireland, President of Uganda and President of Latvia have visited.
